Until recentlyâ the prevailing view assumed lorem ipsum was born as a nonsense text. âItâs not Latinâ though it looks like itâ and it actually says nothingââ Before & After magazine answered a curious readerâ âIts âwordsâ loosely approximate the frequency with which letters occur in Englishâ which is why at a glance it looks pretty real.â
As Cicero would put itâ âUmâ not so fast.â
The placeholder textâ beginning with the line âLorem ipsum dolor sit ametâ consectetur adipiscing elitââ looks like Latin because in its youthâ centuries agoâ it was Latin.
Richard McClintockâ a Latin scholar from Hampden-Sydney Collegeâ is credited with discovering the source behind the ubiquitous filler text. In seeing a sample of lorem ipsumâ his interest was piqued by consecteturâa genuineâ albeit rareâ Latin word. Consulting a Latin dictionary led McClintock to a passage from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (âOn the Extremes of Good and Evilâ)â a first-century B.C. text from the Roman philosopher Cicero.
